Occupational Description
Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including power, lighting, climate control, security, and communications.
There are currently five types of registration:
Electrical Contractor- A person licensed to plan, layout, install, and supervise the installation of wiring, apparatus, and equipment for electric light, heat, power, and other purposes.
Journeyman Electrician- A person licensed to wire for or install electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment and supervise apprentice electricians.
Residential Journeyman Electrician- A person licensed to wire for, or install electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment, and supervise apprentice electricians, in residential occupancies only, three stories or less in height.
Apprentice Electrician- A person registered with the State Electrical Board whose principal occupation is being engaged and supervised in learning and assisting in the installation, alteration, and repair of electrical equipment. An apprentice electrician shall do no electrical wiring except under the direct, personal on-the-job supervision and control and in the immediate presence of a licensee under the State Electrical Act.
Fire Alarm Installer- A person licensed to plan, layout, and install electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment for only those components of fire alarm systems that operate at 50 volts or less.
Licensure Requirements
Electrical Contractor- Applicants must be a graduate of a four-year electrical course in an accredited college or university, and have at least one year experience acceptable to the board, as a licensed journeyman electrician -OR- Have at least five years experience, acceptable to the board, in planning for, laying out, supervising, and installing wiring apparatus, or equipment for electrical light, heat, and power.
The Nebraska State Electrical Board also has a reciprocal licensing agreement for the Electrical Contractor license with Minnesota and South Dakota.
Journeyman Electrician- Applicants must have at least four years experience, acceptable to the board, in the electrical trade. Registration as an apprentice electrician for those years shall, on the approval of the board, constitute evidence of such experience. One year work experience credit will be given for completion of a two-year post-high school electrical course with a degree in electrical technology. One year work experience credit may be given for qualified electrical experience gained in military service.
Residential Journeyman Electrician- Applicants must have at least three years experience, acceptable to the board, in the electrical trade. Registration as an apprentice electrician for those years shall, on the approval of the board, constitute evidence of such experience.
Apprentice Electrician- Applicants must register with the board and pay a fee. Apprenticeships include both on-the-job training and related classroom training as approved by the board.
Fire Alarm Installer- Applicants must have at least two years experience, acceptable to the board in planning, laying out, and installing fire alarm systems and be registered as an apprentice working under a Licensed Fire Alarm Installer for two years.
Fees
Apprentice License- $20.00 in even-numbered years; $40.00 in odd-numbered years
Contractor License- $125.00 in even-numbered years; $250.00 in odd-numbered years
All Others- $25.00 ub even-numbered years; $50.00 in odd-numbered years
Renewal
All licenses expire on December 31 of even-numbered years.
In order to renew any license, the holder must provide a certificate for proof of attendance of at least 12-hours of continuing education approved by the State Electrical Board, with at least six of those hours on the National Electrical Code. (These hours are not required to renew an apprentice registration.)
The holder of an expired license may not install electrical equipment but may renew the license for a period of three months from the date of expiration upon payment of the license fee plus ten percent of the renewal fee for each month or portion thereof past the expiration date.
All holders of licenses expired for more than three months shall apply for a new license. |
