What information do Industry Reports show?

Fastest-Growing Industries shows a list of industries where employment is expected to grow the fastest from 2022 to 2032. Note that growth is based on the expected percent change over those ten years, so these are not necessarily the industries expected to be the industries that add the largest number of jobs (for instance, an industry with very few jobs can be expected to grow at a very high rate). For each industry on this list, you’ll see:

  • The official industry name. Click this link to view a full profile of information about this industry from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Employment, or the number of people employed in this industry for 2022, followed by the number expected to be employed in 2032
  • Percent change, or the rate of employment growth expected over the ten years

Highest-Paying Industries shows a list of industries with the highest median wages for the latest year that wage data are available (currently this is 2022). For each industry you’ll see:

  • The official name. Click this link to view a full profile of information about this industry.
  • Median wages for 2022, shown both hourly and yearly. Note that these average wages include wages paid for all occupations within an industry; individual wages among occupations within an industry could vary significantly from the average.

Industries with Declining Employment shows a list of industries where employment is expected to shrink the most from 2022 to 2032. For each industry on this list, you’ll see:

  • The official industry name. Click this link to view a full profile of information about this industry from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Employment, or the number of people employed in this industry for 2022
  • Percent change, or the rate of employment growth, expected over the ten years

Industries with Largest Employment shows a list of the industries that employ the most people. The numbers are shown for the latest year the data are available (currently, 2022). For each industry on the list, you’ll see:

  • The official industry name. Click this link to view a full profile of information about this industry (or, in some cases, the related broader industry group).
  • Employment, or the number of people employed in this career in 2022

Where does this information come from?

Data in these reports come from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Employment numbers and percent change come from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment Projections, 2022-32.

Earnings and wage data come from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, 2022. Average industry wages include wages paid for all occupations within an industry. Individual wages among occupations within an industry could vary significantly from the average. Wage estimates include base rate, cost-of-living allowances, guaranteed pay, hazardous-duty pay, incentive pay (e.g. commissions and production bonuses), and on-call pay. Wage estimates do not include back pay, jury duty pay, overtime pay, severance pay, shift differentials, nonproduction bonuses, and tuition reimbursements.
