Second Assistant Engineer - Upper Level
License Description To obtain a United States Coast Guard license as a Second Assistant Engineer - Upper Level, the applicant must, while holding a license as a Third Assistant Engineer, complete one of the following: 360 days of service as an Assistant Engineer; or a minimum of 180 days as an Assistant Engineer and 360 days as a Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED); or 360 days as Chief Engineer (Limited-Oceans). Other requirements include passing a written exam, a physical exam, and completion of a first aid course and a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course within the past 12 months. This license is valid for 5 years and may be renewed through various options involving recent work experience, passing an open-book exercise, or completing a refresher training course.
