Licensed Lay Midwife
License Description A Licensed Lay Midwife, while not a Physician or Certified Nurse Midwife, provides prenatal, delivery and postpartum care to women wishing to have a Licensed Lay Midwife assisted home birth. The Licensed Lay Midwife's clients are pregnant women who are determined to be at low risk for the development of medical or obstetrical complications of pregnancy or childbirth. The Licensed Lay Midwife ensures her client receives the required medical and laboratory testing and assessment from a Physician, Certified Nurse Midwife or an Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) clinician. The Licensed Lay Midwife develops a plan of care, providing support and education for the client and her family. They consult with the Physician, Certified Nurse Midwife or ADH clinician for identified risk conditions. They keep ongoing assessments and records. Requirements: 1) Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. 2) Must be certified by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). 3) Must obtain a passing score of 80 or higher on the licensing examination administered by the Arkansas Department of Health. Written exam for licensure: Arkansas Rules Examination.
