License Description Optometrists are primary eye care providers who examine, diagnose, and treat conditions of the human eye, eyelids, adnexa (the structures surrounding the eye), and visual system. The practice of optometry in the state of Arkansas includes, but is not limited to: 1) Treatment of eye disease with prescription medications. 2) Minor surgical procedures such as the removal of foreign objects from the eye. 3) Pre-operative and post-operative management of surgical patients, such as cataract patients. 4) Treatment of visual disorders by the prescribing and sale of eyeglasses or contact lenses, prisms, or low-vision aids. 5) Acting as primary eye care gatekeepers in insurance, third party, and safety vision programs, and being recognized as physician providers in Medicare and Medicaid. Requirements: 1) Must be over 21 years of age. 2) Must be of good moral character. 3) Must be a graduate of a college of optometry, which has been accredited by the Council on Education of the American Optometric Association. 4) Must serve an internship program, supervised by a board-certified ophthalmologist which includes at least 100 hours of supervised clinical training. 5) Must have passed all parts of the National Board of Optometry Examination. 6) Must have passed all written and practical examinations given by the Arkansas State Board of Optometry. Written and Practical Examinations Required. License Renewal fee: $150.00
