Boiler Operator
License Description
Boiler Operators operate manually and automatically fired boilers that generate steam used for heating or power in buildings or industries. They are responsible for lighting the gas or oil-fed burners and starting the pulverizer and stoker to grind and feed coal into the boiler furnace. They are required to observe the pressure, temperature, and draft meters to insure proper operation of all the automatic combustion control systems. They are responsible for making all required corrections to the valves and controls to set and maintain the proper specifications. They observe the boiler and auxiliary units to detect malfunctions and make the needed repairs. There are two types of boiler operator licenses. Low Pressure Boiler Operator licenses allow operation of low pressure boilers only. High Pressure Boiler Operator licenses allow operation of both low and high pressure boilers. Requirements: Before the applicant may participate in an examination, he shall have had not less than six months on-the-job training. Proof of which shall be furnished to the Department of Labor by the employer prior to the examination. A restricted license may be issued to an applicant who has passed the required examination but who has not met the additional requirements provided that: (a) The restricted license shall be effective for one year from the date of issue. (b) The licensee is to work under the direction and supervision of a regularly licensed operator. Written and oral exam: $25.00 Test fee (includes 1st year license), Yearly Renewal fee: $17.00
