License Description Practice as an attorney in the state of California. Fees: Registration as a Law Student: $119 First-Year Law Students' Examination: $624 Bar Examination General Applicant: $667 Annual license fees at active rate: $544 Laptop Fee: $153 Moral Character Determination: $551 Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination: $135 Additional fees for late filing and other special programs or evaluations. Bar Exam Frequency: Twice a year Exam Locations: San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles area, Sacramento and San Diego areas. Experience Requirement: Applicants must complete the requisite pre-legal education (two years of college work or achieving certain scores on specified CLEP examinations) before beginning the study of law. And, receive a JD degree from an ABA approved or California accredited law schools, four years of law study at an unaccredited law school (fixed-facility, distance learning or correspondence) or four years of law study through the Law Office of Judge's Chambers program as specified in the statute and the State Bar Rules. Average Time to Release Bar Examination Bar Examination Results: February - 12 weeks July - 16 weeks Average time for processing a Moral Character Determination application - 6 months Renewal Period: Once admitted to the State Bar of California, members must pay an annual fee. Authority: The State Bar of California acts as an administrative arm of the California Supreme Court in attorney admissions matters. The legislature has established certain requirements for admission to practice law in California as found in Sections 6060 and 6062 of the California Business and Professions Code.
