Barber or Cosmetology Instructor
License Description
Fees: Initial fee of $50 includes examination and licensing costs; Renewal: $40. Examination Frequency: Monday-Friday, as needed. Exam Locations: Glendale and Fairfield. Experience Requirement: Barber and Cosmetology Instructor exam candidates must: (1) Complete the 12th grade or an accredited senior high school course of study in a California public school or its equivalent; (2) Hold a valid license to practice barbering or cosmetology in California; and, (3) Meet one of the following: (a) Completed a cosmetology or barbering instructor training course in an approved school by the board or equivalent training in an approved school in another state; (b) Completed 10 months of practice as a teacher assistant or teacher aide in a school approved by the board; or (c) Practiced cosmetology or barbering in a licensed establishment in California or its equivalent in another state for one year. Practice out-of-state must be within three years of your California application. (An applicant using practical experience to qualify under this section shall submit an affidavit signed by his or her employers attesting to the qualifying experience.) Average Time to Process Application: 8-12 weeks. Renewal Period: Every two (2) years. Authority: Business and Professions Code, Chapter 10, Division 3. Special License Requirements: The board may deny a license on the grounds that the applicant has one of the following: (1) Been convicted of a crime; (2) Done any act involving dishonesty, fraud or deceit with the intent to substantially benefit himself or another or substantially injure another; or (3) Done any act which if done by a licentiate of the business or profession in question, would be grounds for suspension or revocation of license.
