Mental Health Counselor
License Description DESCRIPTION OF OCCUPATION: A Mental Health Counselor works with individuals and groups to promote optimum mental health, with emphasis on prevention. May help deal with addictions and substance abuse; family, parenting, and marital problems; suicide; stress management; problems with self-esteem; and issues associated with aging and mental and emotional health. REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSING: Experience requirements: Have supervisor verify the completion of: 1) at least 2 academic terms of supervised practicum intern experience or equivalent; and 2) 3,000 hours of post-graduate experience in the practice of mental health counseling. Education requirements: Master's or Doctoral degree from an accredited educational institution in counseling or allied field related to the practice of mental health counseling. Complete graduate level coursework in counseling comprising a minimum of 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours and include required subject areas. EXAMINATIONS: National Counselor Exam for Licensure and Certification (NCE). FEES: Between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023, pay $316 (application $60, license $213, compliance resolution fund $43) OTHER: There were 541 licenses currently active as of February 24, 2022. ~ revised 04/21
