License Description DESCRIPTION OF OCCUPATION: A Nurse Aide provides basic patient care under direction of nursing staff. Perform duties, such as feed, bathe, dress, groom, or move patients, or change linens. Certification Exam and Registry Services are provided by: Prometric Attn: HICNA 354 Uluniu Street, Suite 308, Kailua, HI 96734 808-967-1200 www.prometric.com/nurseaide/HI REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSE: Successful completion of an approved training program and passing score on both written and clinical skills demonstration exams; or Reciprocity granted to a qualified nurse aide from another state whose requirements are comparable to Hawaii's. Maintenance of the certification: certification is valid for up to 24 months and must be renewed biennially; must perform nurse aide services and be in good standing (no findings of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property) for recertification. Refer to Chapter 16-89A, Hawaii Administrative Rules for detailed requirements: http://cca.hawaii.gov/pvl/files/2013/08/har_89a-c2.pdf EXAMINATIONS: Written test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions that evaluate nurse aide knowledge and skills. Can be also taken in oral/audio form. Candidates who take the oral test will be provided a headset and will hear the exam questions read to them. Candidates will have 90 minutes to take the test. Content of test – I) Role of the Nurse Aide (18%); II) Promotion of Safety (18%); III) Promotion of Function and Health of Residents (24%); IV) Basic Nursing Care Provided by the Nurse Aide (26%); V) Providing Specialized Care for Residents with Changes in Health (14%). Skills that candidate will be asked to perform are assigned by computer at the time candidate is scheduled for testing. Candidate will be scored on 5 assigned skills out of 22 possible skills. While performing 3 assigned skills, the candidate will also be scored on 2 additional skills – handwashing and indirect care. Indirect care is related to residents' rights and preferences, communication with the resident, resident safety, comfort and needs, and infection control. Amount of time candidate will have to take the test is based on the specific skills he/she is asked to perform. Time allowed ranges from 31-40 minutes. To pass the clinical skills test, candidate must pass all 5 skills (not perfectly but with competency). Each skill has a list of checkpoints. The Nurse Aide Evaluator (NAE) will watch the candidate perform the skill and compare the candidate's performance to the checkpoints for the skill.
