Nurse Anesthetist (APRN)
License Description
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION Performs registered nurse functions and practices advanced skills related to anesthesia care based on knowledge acquired in a post-basic program of study and clinical experience. A person must hold a current Kentucky advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP) registration to practice in Kentucky as a nurse anesthetist. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS In addition to successful completion of a Board approved registered nursing program, a person must have successfully completed an organized post-basic program of study and clinical experience recognized by the regulatory agency, in concert with the national nursing organization. EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS The schedule for examinations is determined by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. For type of examination, examination fee and retake procedures, contact the regulatory agency (address listed below). GENERAL INFORMATION for LICENSURE or CERTIFICATION There are no age, residency or work experience (after completion of the prelicensure program) requirements for licensure requirements. Must have a current active RN license in Kentucky and be certified as a registered nurse anesthetist. Must seek registration as an advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP). Initial registration fee is $80.00. Biennial registration must be renewed by October 31 of even years, at a fee of $55.00. Registration and reciprocity with other states varies. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (after licensure or certification) Thirty (30) contact hours are required for biennial renewal of registered nurse license. Continuing education contact hours must be earned via a Board approved provider. An ARNP must complete five (5) contact hours of continuing education in pharmacology (included with the 30 hour requirement) for biennial renewal.
