License Description GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION Functions as a registered nurse and practices as an advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP) in the management and care of essentially healthy children and/or adults in all aspects and developmental stages of life. Advanced practice is based on knowledge and skills acquired in a post-basic program of study and clinical experience. A person must hold a current Kentucky ARNP registration to be employed as a nurse practitioner in Kentucky. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS In addition to successful completion of a Board approved program of registered nursing, a person must have successfully completed an organized post-basic program of study and clinical experience recognized by the regulatory agency, in concert with the appropriate national nursing organization. EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS The schedule of certification examinations is determined by the national certification organizations. For type of examination, examination fees, and retake procedures, contact the regulatory agency (address listed below). GENERAL INFORMATION for LICENSURE or CERTIFICATION There are no age or residency requirements. Must have a current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Kentucky and be certified as a nurse practitioner by the appropriate national nursing organization. Initial license fee is $80.00. Biennial registration must be renewed by October 31 in even years, at a fee of $55.00. Registration and reciprocity with other states varies. Contact the regulatory agency in the appropriate state for information regarding requirements. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (after licensure or certification) Thirty (30) contact hours required for biennial renewal of the registered nurse license. Continuing education contact hours must be earned via a Board approved provider.
