License Description
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION Performs functions which require substantial knowledge, judgement and nursing skills, based upon the principles of psychological, biological, physical and social sciences in the application of the nursing process in care, counsel and health teaching of persons who are ill, injured or infirm, and in the maintenance of health. A person must hold a Kentucky current, active registered nurse license to be employed as or practice as a registered nurse in Kentucky. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Must be a high school graduate or equivalency and must have successfully completed the basic curriculum in a state board approved school of nursing that is at least two (2) years in length. Either an associate, baccalaureate, or diploma program is accepted. Diploma programs in nursing no longer exist in Kentucky. EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS To obtain an application, contact the regulatory agency. The examination is a comprehensive, multiple choice, National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) using Computerized Adaptive Testing. The NCLEX fee is $88.00, as of April 1994. Should you fail the examination, contact the regulatory agency, for retake procedures. GENERAL INFORMATION for LICENSURE or CERTIFICATION There are no age, residency, or work experience (after completion of the prelicensure program) requirements for licensure. A biennial license must be renewed by October 31 in even years. The initial license fee is $80.00. Active license renewal is $65.00, while the inactive license renewal fee is $45.00. Contact the regulatory agency regarding licensure by endorsement. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (after licensure or certification) Completion of thirty (30) contact hours offered by a Board approved provider are required for biennial renewal.
