Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)
License Description GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION A sexual assault nurse examiner is a registered nurse trained in the forensic examination of victims of sexual assault and credentialed by the Board of Nursing. A nurse examiner conducts the examination, collects and preserves evidence, and testifies in legal proceedings. The SANE nurse becomes an integral part of the multidisciplinary team investigating the survivors of sexual assault, and should be knowledgeable in the nursing process, forensic nursing concepts, victim's issues, and legal responsibilities. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS In addition to successful completion of a Board approved program of registered nursing, a person must have successfully completed a Board approved SANE educational program or a comparable program. GENERAL INFORMATION for LICENSURE or CERTIFICATION There are no age, residency or work experience requirements (after completion of the SANE educational program) for the SANE credential. Must have current, active registered nurse (RN) license in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Must apply for a SANE credential. Initial fee is $50.00. The SANE credential must be renewed every two (2) years (fee $40.00) and expires with the RN license. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (after licensure or certification) Renewal of the credential requires the completion of five (5) contact hours of continuing education related to the role of the SANE nurse. The five (5) contact hours may be included in the required thirty (30) contact hours of continuing education for renewal of the registered nurse license. SPECIAL COMMENTS or CONDITIONS Individuals must hold a current, active RN license in order to hold a SANE credential. The SANE credential was first issued by the Board of Nursing in 1998 as authorized under the Kentucky Revised Statutes Chapter 314.
