Mining, Electrical Inspector
License Description
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION A state employee who inspects underground and surface mines for safe electrical practices as required by law. Teaches first aid, mine rescue, foreman's school, and fire boss classes and initial electrical and annual electrical retraining classes. Attends safety meetings and consults with mine operators and employees on safety matters. Assists with mine rescue and recovery work during and after mine fires and gas ignitions. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Five (5) years experience in coal mines. A bachelor's degree in mining engineering from a recognized institution will substitute for two (2) years of the required experience. An associate degree in Mining technology from a recognized institution will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience. EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS Contact the regulatory agency for application procedures. For schedule of examinations contact the District Office in Martin, Hazard, Harlan, London, Pikeville, or Madisonville. Must pass the Mine Inspectors and Electrical certification exam, with a score of 80% in all subjects. Examination fee of $50.00. Should you fail, apply to retake the next time the test is administered. GENERAL INFORMATION for LICENSURE or CERTIFICATION Applicant must be approximately twenty-three (23) years of age and have five (5) years of experience. Must have a preemployment physical examination, reflecting good health. Must be a Kentucky resident. Must be conscientious and trustworthy to ensure safety of self, employees and the public. Kentucky has no reciprocity agreement with any state. Must possess an underground mine foreman certificate. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (after licensure or certification) Sixteen (16) hours of retraining PLUS electrical retraining annually.
