Occupational Description
Funeral Directing-
Funeral Directing is counseling families or next of kin in regards to the conduct of a funeral service for a dead human body for burial, disposition, or cremation, and/or directing or supervising burial, disposition, or cremation of dead human bodies.
Funeral Directors may also provide for or maintain a funeral establishment.
Only licensed Funeral Directors may represent themselves as or use in connection with their own name the title of funeral director, mortician, or any other title implying that he or she is engaged in the business of funeral directing.
Embalming-
Embalming means preparing dead human bodies for burial or other final disposal by a licensed funeral director.
Embalming may also include requesting and obtaining burial or removal permits, or assuming any of the other duties incident to the practice of embalming.
Only licensed Funeral Directors & Embalmers or their apprentices may engage in:
1. The disinfection and preservation of dead human beings, in entirety or in part;
2. The attempted disinfection and preservation thereof by the use or application of chemical substances, fluids, or gases ordinarily used, prepared, or intended for such purposes, either by outward application of such chemical substances, fluids, or gases on the body, or introducing them into the body, by vascular or hypodermic injection, or by direct introduction into the organs or cavities.
Licensure Requirements
Applicants must:1. Present satisfactory proof that the applicant has earned the equivalent of 40 semester hours ofcollege credit, in addition to a full course of instruction in an accredited school of mortuary science.Such hours must include the equivalent of:A. Six semester hours of English;B. Twelve semester hours of BusinessC. Four semester hours of Chemistry;D. Twelve semester hours of a biological science relating to the human body;E. Six semester hours of psychology or counseling.2. Present proof to the department that he or she has completed the following training:A. A full course of instruction in an accredited school of mortuary science;B. A 12-month apprenticeship under the supervision of a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmerpracticing in Nebraska. This apprenticeship must consist of arterially embalming 25 bodies andassisting with 25 funerals;C. Successful completion of the licensure examination approved by the Board;3. Provide satisfactory evidence that he or she is of good character and has attained the age of 19;4. Provide proof that he or she is either a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted into the United States who is eligible for a credential under the Uniform Credentialing Act, or a nonimmigrant whose visa for entry, or application for visa for entry, is related to such employment in the United States.

Renewal
Renewal InformationRenewal is required biennially by February 1 of even-numbered years. The renewal fee is $90.00.During the 24 months prior to the license expiration date, each licensed funeral director, embalmer, or funeral director and embalmer must complete: (A) 12 hours of acceptable continuing education hours; and (B) Pass the Nebraska jurisprudence examination with a score of at least a 75%. |
