Occupational Description


Nursing Home Administrator- An individual who is responsible for the operation of a nursing home. Provisional License- A license for a person otherwise not qualified for licensure as a Nursing Home Administrator who is selected to serve as the Administrator in order to maintain daily operations. Nursing Home Administrator Responsible/Overseeing More Than 1 Facility, or the Dual Role of Administrator and Department Head- An Administrator may be responsible for and oversee the operation of up to three licensed facilities or may act in the dual role of Administrator and Department Head (but not in the dual role of Administrator and Director of Nursing). Nursing Home Administrator of a Facility Caring Primarily for Persons with Head Injuries and Associated Disorders- An individual who will function as the Administrator of a facility caring primarily for persons with head injuries and associated disorders. Mentoring/Administrator in Training (AIT)- A person who is training to become a Nursing Home Administrator and is supervised in a Nebraska nursing home by a Certified Preceptor. This requires completion of at least 640 hours of training and experience, which must be completed in not less than 4 calendar months, and must be at least 20 hours per week. Certified Preceptor- A person who is currently licensed by the State of Nebraska as a Nursing Home Administrator and is approved by the department to supervise a person in a mentoring or AIT program. He or she must have three years of experience as a Nursing Home Administrator and have practiced within the last two years.

Licensure Requirements


Applicants must:1. Have passed both the NHA exam and CORE exam through the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) for Nursing Home Administrators;2. Meet one of the following education & experience requirements:A. Associate degree and:(a) If the applicant has at least two years of experience working full-time in a nursing home,or previous work experience in health care administration, he or she may complete either theMentoring Program or the Administrator-in-Training program;(b) Applicants who do not have at least two full years of experience working in a nursing home must complete the Administrator-in-Training program;B. Bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree (in any subject) and completion of Mentoring Program and completion of Core Educational Requirements coursework. Core Educational Requirements means a minimum of three coursework hours in each of the following areas (to determine whether specific courses satisfy these requirements, contact DHHS):. Patient Care & Services;. Social Services;. Financial Management;. Administration;. Rules, Regulations, & Standards Relating to the Operation of a Health Care Facility;C. Bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree in health care or health care administration and:(a) If the applicant has a bachelor's or advanced degree in health care/health care administrationand two year's of previous work experience in health care administration, he or she is not required to complete either the Mentoring Program or Administrator-in-Training program;(b) If the applicant has a bachelor's or advanced degree in health care/health care administrationand does not have previous work experience in health care administration, he or she mustcomplete the Mentoring Program;D. Nursing degree:(a) If the applicant has a nursing degree and a full two years of previous work experience in health care administration, he or she is not required to complete either the Mentoring Program or the Administrator-in-Training program;(b) If the applicant has a nursing degree and does not have previous work experience in healthcare administration, he or she must have completed coursework related to the core educationalrequirements (see above) and complete the Mentoring Program;3. Be at least 19 years of age;4. If any disciplinary action was taken against the applicant's license/registration by another state,applicant must submit a letter of explanation of the disciplinary action.

Fees


Nursing Home Administrator License Fee- $166.00, or $41.50 if initial license is obtained within six months prior to the next expiration date. Continuing Education Program Fee- $25.00 Administrator-in-Training or Mentoring Program Fee- $50.00 Certified Preceptor License Fee- $25.00 Provisional Nursing Home Administrator License Fee- $110.00

Renewal


Nursing Home Administrator- Renewal is required biennially by December 31 of each even-numbered year. The renewal fee is $166.00. At least 50 hours of approved continuing education must be completed during the prior 24 months to qualify for renewal. Licensees that complete more than 50 hours during a renewal period may carry a maximum of 25 hours earned into the next renewal period. Provisional License- A provisional license can be issued for no more than 180 calendar days, and may not be renewed. The board may grant an extension not to exceed 90 days if the person seeking the provisional license is in a mentoring program. Certified Preceptor- Renewal is required every four years, by December 31. The renewal fee is $25.00. A Certified Preceptor must complete at least eight hours of approved preceptor training during the preceding 48 months to qualify for renewal. Preceptors who supervise a trainee in an Administrator-in-Training or Mentorship program will be granted eight hours towards this requirement (or 16 for supervising two trainees), which may also be counted towards renewal of the Preceptor's underlying Nursing Home Administrator license.
