Boxing & Martial Arts Support Occupations
License Description
Occupational Description
Martial Arts means any of several arts of combat and self-defense that are recognized and practiced as a sport, including, but not limited to: boxing; wrestling; kickboxing; karate; judo; taekwondo; aikido; jujutsu; krav maga; muay thai; kung fu. Promoter- A person or entity licensed to organize and promote professional boxing or martial arts events. The term "promoter" includes any association, corporation, organization, club, partnership, or other entity that organizes and conducts boxing or MMA events, and any employee thereof. Referee- A person licensed to ensure that a bout is conducted according to the appropriate rules. Attending Physician- A person who conducts diagnostic blood tests, physical examinations, or other medical procedures for a boxing or MMA event. He or she must be a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy licensed to practice in Nebraska. Manager- A person who acts as a contestant's representative to negotiate bouts and contracts. Matchmaker- A person who matches contestants according to ability, weight, experience, etc. A licensed matchmaker is required for professional boxing events, and professional or amateur MMA events. Judge- A person licensed to score a professional boxing or MMA round. Amateur event judges do not require a license. Timekeeper- A person licensed to signal when a round is over and when ten seconds of a round remains. Second- A person who is licensed and authorized to sit in a designated ringside area in order to coach and provide other assistance to a contestant, and who may to stop a bout if, in the opinion of the second, the contestant is unable to safely continue.
Licensure Requirements
All licenses must be approved by the Athletic Commissioner. To obtain a license, submit a form downloaded from the Commission website and pay the appropriate fee. All persons required to be licensed must be licensed prior to the start of an event in which they will participate. Promoters must be licensed at least 30 days prior to the event. For specific requirements for each occupation, review Neb. Admin. Code 38 or consult the Nebraska Athletic Commission.

Renewal
All licenses expire June 30 following the date of issuance.
