License Description

Occupational Description


A Boiler/Pressure Vessel Inspector inspects boilers, pressure vessels, piping, and other pressure retaining items, whether in service or during new construction. He or she uses state, national, and international codes to verify that the inspected items are in compliance with safety rules and construction standards. Some of the codes used are the National Board Inspection Code, the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes, and the NFPA Codes. Following an inspection, he or she reports on the conditions of inspected items to the appropriate authority, makes recommendations for repair, and interfaces with the public, owners, and operators of inspected items.

Licensure Requirements


Boiler inspectors shall hold a valid commission with appropriate endorsements as issued by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors and shall be employed by a National Board and/or ASME-accredited Authorized Inspection Agency, or by a National Board Member Jurisdiction. The National Board Commission is recognized in 48 of 50 states, all provinces of Canada, and in numerous other cities and countries around the world. Most jurisdictions issue reciprocal commissions to National Board Commissioned inspectors to permit them to inspect items within the jurisdiction. To obtain a National Board Commission, contact:The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors1055 Crupper AvenueColumbus, OH 43229-1183 Additionally, to inspect boilers in the state of Nebraska, a National Board Commissioned Inspector must also hold a valid Nebraska Commission, which can be obtained from the Chief Boiler Inspector upon submission of a citizen attestation, application, and payment of the $20.00 commission fee.

Renewal
