License Description

Occupational Description


Geologists perform geological service or work, including, but not limited to, consultations, geological investigations, surveys, evaluations, planning, mapping, or reviews of geological work related to the practice of geology, in which the performance is related to the public welfare or safeguarding of life, health, property, and the environment. A person must be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Geologists (NEBOG) in order to practice geology in Nebraska.

Licensure Requirements


A person applying for licensure as a Geologist in Nebraska must submit a completed application along with the applicable application fees. Education: An applicant must have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours, or 45 hours of course work, in geology, and have received a geology or geologic specialty degree from a program recognized by the Board. As a general guideline, course work should include at least five of the following courses: Field Geology, Physical Geology, Mineralogy, Petrology/Petrography, Stratigraphy/Sedimentology/Soils, Structural Geology, Hydrogeology, Or equivalents of these courses. Examinations: An applicant must have successfully passed examinations covering the fundamentals and practice of geology. Currently, the Board uses the Fundamentals of Geology (FG) and Practice of Geology (PG) exams administered by The National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) as the accepted exams. Experience: An applicant must provide a documented record of at least five years of progressive geological experience obtained subsequent to the completion of the Education requirements. References: An applicant must provide four references affirming the good character and reputation of the applicant. At least two of the references must be from professional geologists having personal knowledge of the applicants geological work experience. Reciprocal Licensure Requirements- To qualify to Reciprocal Licensure, applicants must: 1. Meet the initial licensure requirements; 2. Be licensed in good standing in at least one other state, possession of the United States, or the District of Columbia. The Board may waive the examination and/or education requirements if: 1. The applicant has been continuously licensed since December 31, 1991; -OR- 2. The applicant has been licensed in good standing as a professional Geologist pursuant to the authority of a state, possession of the U.S., or the District of Columbia based on requirements that do not conflict with the Geologists Regulation Act and the applicant has lawfully practiced geology for at least 15 years in such jurisdiction(s).

Renewal


Renewal is required annually by December 31. The renewal fee is $65.00.Late Fee- 10% of the annual fee for each month the renewal is late, but not to exceed twice theamount of the regular renewal fee. After one year, a new application is required in order to reinstate the license, along with meeting the current licensing requirements in place at that time.Please refer to the Board's website for the latest information.
