Occupational Description Environmental Health Specialists interpret and enforce city, state, federal, and/or other laws regarding sanitary standards in food, water supply, garbage disposal, sewage disposal, and housing maintenance.
An environmental health specialist collects samples and specimens for laboratory analysis and conducts inspections of schools, hospitals, parks, motels, food establishments, and other public facilities to insure that proper control of waste, refuse, noise, insects, hazardous substances, and products is maintained.
Licensure Requirements Applicants must:
1. Have graduated with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and satisfactorily completed at least 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours of academic work in the basic natural sciences;
2. Be employed full-time as an Environmental Health Specialist for a period not less than two years;
3. Have passed the registration examination.
An applicant that has graduated with a degree higher than a baccalaureate degree may apply when they have been employed as an environmental health specialist for at least one year;
4. Submit the required application form;
4. Pay the required Fee;
5. Provide proof of Age;
6. Be a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted into the United States who is eligible for a credential under the Uniform Credentialing Act, or a nonimmigrant whose visa for entry, or application for visa for entry, is related to such employment in the United States.
7. If the applicant holds or has held a credential to provide health services, health-related services, or environmental services in Nebraska or in another jurisdiction, he or she must have the licensing agency submit to the Department a certification of their credential;
8. If he or she has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor, he or she must submit:
A. A list of any misdemeanor or felony convictions;
B. A copy of the court record, which includes charges and disposition;
C. An explanation from the applicant of the events leading to the conviction (what, when, where, why) and a summary of the actions he or she has taken to address the behaviors/actions related to the convictions;
D. All addiction/mental health evaluations and proof of treatment, if the conviction involved a drug and/or alcohol related offense, and if treatment was obtained and/or required;
E. A letter from the probation officer addressing probationary conditions and current status, if he or she is currently on probation.
9. If any disciplinary action was taken against applicant's license/registration by another state, applicant must submit a letter of explanation of the disciplinary action.
Provisional environmental health specialist: Any person meeting the educational qualifications, but who does not meet the experience requirements, may make application for certification as a provisional environmental health specialist.
Fees Provisional Environmental Health Specialist License- $116.00
Renewal Renewal is due biennially by December 31 of each even-numbered year. The renewal fee is $116.00.
Twenty-four hours of continuing education are required biennially to qualify for renewal. |
