License Description
Occupational Description
An Optometrist examines, diagnoses, and treats conditions of the visual system. They prescribe corrective procedures and conserve, improve, and correct vision through the use of lenses, contact lenses, prisms, orthotopic exercises, visual training, and controlled visual environment. Optometrists examine patients for visual pathology or manifestations of disease, and refer patients with pathological conditions to a medical practitioner and/or treat the condition if certified to do so.
Licensure Requirements
Licensure to practice optometry in Nebraska may be obtained either through examination or reciprocity.Examination- Applicants who have graduated from an accredited school or college of optometry.Reciprocity- Nebraska Revised Statute 38-129.02 outlines a reciprocity pathway for individuals who are moving to Nebraska from another jurisdiction that has a similar license type.All applicants are also required to complete the Nebraska Optometry Jurisprudence Exam, which relates to the statutes and regulations that govern optometry in the state of Nebraska, with a minimum score of 60%. If the applicant is going to prescribe, administer, or dispense controlled substances in Nebraska, he or she must also provide proof of federal DEA registration.
Fees
License Fee- $146.00 Diagnostic Certification- $10.00 Therapeutic Certification- $10.00 Fingerprint Processing Fee- $45.25 (Paid directly to the Nebraska State Patrol)
Renewal
Renewal is required biennially by August 1 of even-numbered years. The renewal fee is $146.00. Forty-four hours of acceptable continuing education, earned during the preceding 24-month period prior to the license expiration date, are required to qualify for renewal.
