Occupational Description


A Veterinarian is a person who has received a doctorate in veterinary medicine from an accredited school of veterinary medicine or its equivalent. A Veterinarian can practice veterinary surgery, obstetrics, dentistry, and all other branches or specialties of veterinary medicine.

Licensure Requirements


Licensure in veterinary medicine and surgery may be obtained either by: Examination- Applicants must have passed the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) within the last five years with a converted score of at least 70; -OR- Reciprocity- Applicants must meet both of the following conditions: 1. Have been actively engaged in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery at least one of the three years immediately preceding the application under a license in another state or territory of the United States, the District of Columbia, or a Canadian province; 2. Have passed either the NAVLE or NBE/CCT with a converted score of at least 70.  All applicants are also required to complete a Nebraska State Jurisprudence Examination, and to pass a fingerprint criminal background check.  If the applicant is going to administer, prescribe, or dispense controlled substances, he or she will need to provide proof of his or her federal DEA registration.  If an applicant has completed education, training, or service that they believe is substantially similar to the education required for this credential while they were a member of the armed forces of the United States, active or reserve, the National Guard of any state, the military reserves of any state, or the naval militia of any state, they may submit such evidence with their application for review.  The department, with the recommendation of the appropriate board, will review to determine if the education, training or services are substantially similar and will provide advisement as to whether they can be used toward the education required for the credential. 

Fees


Initial License Fee- $250.00, or $62.50 if initial license is obtained within 5 months prior to the next expiration date.  Fingerprint Processing Fee- $45.25 (Paid directly to the Nebraska State Patrol)

Renewal


Renewal is required biennially by April 1 of every even-numbered year, regardless of when the license was issued. The renewal fee is $163.00. Thirty-two hours of one or a combination of approved categories of continuing education, within the renewal period immediately preceding the license renewal date, are required to qualify for renewal.
