License Description

Occupational Description


Perfusionists perform the functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiovascular, circulatory, and respiratory systems or other organs, and ensure the safe management of physiologic functions by monitoring and analyzing the parameters of those systems under the order and supervision of a licensed physician.

Licensure Requirements


Applicants must: 1. Be at least 19 years old; 2. Possess good moral character; 3. Submit to the Department a completed Perfusionist license application; 4. Pay the application fee of $150.00. There are three methods of applying for a perfusionist license: Education & Examination, Board Certification, or Reciprocity. Education & Examination- A. Graduate from an accredited perfusionist education program; B. Pass the certification examination offered by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) that includes: Part I- The Perfusion Basic Science Examination Part II- The Clinical Applications in Perfusion Examination (Or a substantially equivalent examination approved by the Board of Medicine and Surgery.) Board Certification- Submit evidence of holding a current certificate as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist issued by the ABCP or its successor. Reciprocity- Submit evidence of holding a credential as a Perfusionist issued by another state or possession of the United States, or the District of Columbia, which has standards substantially equivalent to those of Nebraska.

Fees


License Fee- $150.00, or $37.50 if initial license is obtained within 6 months prior to the next expiration date. Initial License Fee Waiver:Beginning January 1, 2020, the initial licensure fee will be waived for applicants of licenses issued underthe Uniform Credentialing Act who are:1) A Young Worker (between the ages of 18 – 25 (or, 17 – 25 if licensed under the CosmetologyPractice Act));2) Military Family (active duty service members, military spouses, honorably dischargedveterans, spouses of honorably discharged veterans, and un-remarried surviving spouses ofdeceased service members); and,3) Low-Income (enrolled in a state or federal public assistant program like SNAP, TANF, etc orwhose household adjusted gross income is below 130% of the federal income povertyguideline).What Will This Not Affect?This change in statute will not waive the fee for criminal background checks for those professions thatrequire one. It will not waive the fee required for renewal or reinstatement of licensure, even if thelicensee could be classified as a young worker, military family, or low-income. The law will not waive thePatient Safety fee required of physicians, osteopathic physicians, or physician assistants.There is a fee waiver available for active duty military personnel for renewal listed under a separatestatute.

Renewal


Renewal is required biennially by May 1 of each odd-numbered year. The renewal fee is $150.00. License renewal requires each Perfusionist to: 1. Perform a minimum of 80 clinical activities, as defined by ABCP, of which no more than 30 clinical activities may be documented intraoperative pump standbys that must be documentable in an audit; 2) Earn 30 continuing education units (CEUs), as approved by the ABCP, of which 10 CEUs must be earned in Category 1. Hours are to be earned within the 24 months immediately preceding the date of expiration, except that a licensee who has earned more than the 30 hours required for license renewal for one 24-month renewal period is allowed to carry over up to 15 hours to the next 24-month renewal period.  Clinical activities include: Primary bypass; Instructor for a primary bypass performed by a student; Veno-venous bypass; Pump-assisted coronary and/or organ perfusion; Cardiopulmonary Support (CPS);  Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO); Ventricular Assist Device (VAD); Documented intraoperative pump standby.
