Occupational Description


Massage Therapists engage in the physical, mechanical, or electrical manipulation of soft tissue for the therapeutic purposes of enhancing muscle relaxation, reducing stress, improving circulation, or instilling a greater sense of well-being. Massage therapy may include the use of oils, salt glows, heat lamps, and hydrotherapy. Massage therapy shall not include diagnosis or treatment, or use of procedures for which a license to practice medicine, surgery, chiropractics, podiatry is required, nor the use of microwave diathermy, short wave diathermy, ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, electrical stimulation of over thirty-five volts, neurological hyperstimulation, or spinal or joint adjustments.

Licensure Requirements


Applicants must: 1.  Be at least 19 years old.2.  Be either a citizen of the United States or lawfully present in the United States.3.  Have graduated from an approved massage therapy program school in Nebraska (completion of at least 1000 hours of training) or meet the reciprocity requirements identified below (for those licensed in another state).4.  Have passed the MBLEx examination through FSMTB or an approved examination through NCBTMB. Reciprocity:An applicant who is credentialed or authorized to practice massage therapy in another jurisdiction and has not completed 1,000 hours of training in massage therapy, may obtain hours to equal the required 1,000 hours of training through a massage therapy program, a college or university, work experience or continuing education. The applicant is not required to have attained the specified hours in the areas identified in 172 NAC 82. Hour equivalents may be granted in the following manner:  (A)         50-60 minutes obtained from a course of study in massage therapy equals 1 hour.  (B)         1 semester credit hour of massage therapy related college or university hours equals 15 hours. (C)         200 hours for each year of full-time practice as a massage therapist.  (D)         Up to 100 hours obtained from continuing education programs approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) or the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB).  Applicants applying by reciprocity must also pass the jurisprudence examination:  https://www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=mjuzmda1oq9s2f

Fees


Initial License Examination- $110.00

Renewal


Renewal is required biennially by November 1 of odd-numbered years. The renewal fee is $110.00.16 hours of continuing education are required biennially to qualify for renewal, 50% of which may be gained through on-line or electronic media.  Licensees must complete at least 8 hours of hands-on massage therapy continuing education and 3 hours of ethics each renewal.
