Occupational Description
Certified Installer of Underground Storage Tanks- A person who oversees permanent tank installations. The certified individual must personally supervise the installation, and be responsible for compliance with: Title 159 Rules & Regulations for Underground Tanks; National Industry Standards; Manufacturer's installation instructions; Directives from the Fire Marshal Deputy. Cathodic Protection Tester- A person who can demonstrate an understanding of the principles and measurements of all common types of cathodic protection systems as applied to buried or submerged metal piping and tank systems. At a minimum, such persons must have education and experience in soil resistivity, stray current, structure-to-soil potential, and component electrical isolation measurements of buried metal piping and tank systems. Certified Closer of Underground Storage Tanks- A person who oversees permanent tank closure. The certified individual must personally supervise the closure, and be responsible for the following tasks: Obtain a tank closure permit and have it in possession at the site; Empty tanks of product and sludge & properly dispose of the materials; Assure that tanks are made safe before closure takes place; Assure that the tanks are either properly filled with an inert material or removed from the ground; Assure that piping is safely removed and/or appropriately sealed in place; Assure that removed tanks and piping are properly disposed of; Assure that environmental closure assessments are done in accordance with Title 159; Assure that closure assessment reports are sent to the State Fire Marshal on a timely basis within 45 days of the closure.
Licensure Requirements
Certified UST Cathodic Protection Tester applicants must: 1. Prove successful completion of approved, formal training, including an examination measuring the applicant's technical knowledge; 2. Complete an application; 3. Pass an exam given by the State Fire Marshal that includes rules and regulations pertaining to cathodic protection. Certified UST Installer & Certified Closer of Underground Storage Tanks must: 1. Complete an application; 2. Pass the exam.
Fees
There is no fee to take the exams.
Renewal
Certifications must be renewed every three years by successfully passing the examination.
