Occupational Description


Truck Drivers operate a variety of trucks to transport materials and finished products from one location to another location. Light Truck Drivers drive trucks with a capacity weighing under three tons, and transport materials from one location to another. There are usually specified destinations, such as railroad stations, plants, offices, residences, or within industrial yards. (NOTE: In Nebraska, Truck Driver Heavy and Light or Delivery are combined under one license.)

Licensure Requirements


Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDLs) are required for individualsdriving a vehicle that weighs more than 26,000pounds (gross vehicle weight rating), carries 16 or morepassengers, or transports placarded amounts of hazardousmaterials.Applicants for CDL Intrastate (within Nebraska) Classes "A,""B," or "C" must be 18 years of age.Interstate drivers (across state lines) Class "A", "B," or "C"must be 21 years of age. All individuals holding a Nebraska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) are required to certify tothe DMV what type of operation they engage in. There are four categories:. Category A - Interstate & Non-Excepted;. Category B - Interstate & Excepted;. Category C - Intrastate & Non-Excepted;. Category D - Intrastate & Excepted.In addition, if they operate in Category A (Interstate & Non-Excepted), Drivers are required to providethe DMV with a current copy of their medical examiner' certificate (card - not long form) and keepcurrent with the DMV.Both written knowledge and skill tests (vehicle inspection, basic controls, and road test) are requiredto obtain a first-time CDL license.Prior to the issuance of a Nebraska CDL with the hazardous materials endorsement, individuals willbe required, as per the USA PATRIOT Act, to have a Transportation Security Administration (TSA)security threat assessment completed. Prior to issuance Entry Level Driver Training may be required.

Five-Year CDL Fee- $60.00Change of Class, Restriction, and/or Endorsement- $15.00

Renewal


Renewal is required every five years, with the CDL expiring on the licensee's birthday in the fifth year after issuance. The renewal fee is $60.00.When renewing a CDL license, if the license has not been expired for one year or more, the writtenand driving test will be waived, with the exception of the hazardous materials written exam, which is always required.
