Marriage and Family Therapist
License Description Applicants must: 1) Be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen (or legally entitled to work in the United States), and be of good moral character. 2) Have an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university approved by the Board. 3) Have completed residency training in psychiatry, or have a graduate degree in marriage and family therapy, psychology, or social work from an accredited institution approved by the State Board, or an equivalent combination of education and training approved by the Board. (Contact the Board for information on the required graduate coursework.) 4) Have at least 2 years of postgraduate experience in marriage and family therapy (and at least 3,000 hours of supervised experience, 1,500 of which must consist of direct client contact). 5) Pass an examination. 6) Provide three references (must be submitted directly from the references to the board.) Licensed Intern To obtain the required supervised experience indicated above, applicants must first obtain licensure as a marriage and family therapist intern. In general, applicants must meet the requirements listed above in items 1 - 3 and have a supervision agreement with an approved supervisor. Contact the Board for more information on the intern requirements. Fees may be subject to change. Fees are: application--$75; examination--$220; license processing--$50; annual license--$150.
