Clinical Professional Counselor
License Description Applicants must: 1) Be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen (or legally entitled to work in the United States), and be of good moral character. 2a) Have completed residency training in psychiatry from an accredited institution approved by the Board or, 2b) have a graduate degree from an approved* program in mental health counseling or community counseling or, 2c) have a degree acceptable to the Board that includes the completion of a practicum and internship in mental health counseling (taken concurrently with the degree program and supervised by a licensed mental health professional). 3) Have at least 2 years of postgraduate experience in professional counseling. 4) Have at least 3,000 hours of supervised experience in professional counseling including: at least 1,500 hours of direct client contact and at least 100 hours of counseling under the direct supervision of an approved supervisor (at least 1 hour per week must have been completed for each work setting at which the applicant provided counseling). 5) Have passed the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors. * Program approved by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. Licensed Intern To obtain the required supervised experience indicated above, applicants must first obtain licensure as a clinical professional counselor intern. In general, applicants must meet the requirements listed above in items 1 - 3, and have a supervision agreement with an approved supervisor. Contact the Board for more information on the intern requirements. Fees may be subject to change. Fees are: application--$75; examination--$220; license processing--$50; annual license--$150.
