Problem Gambling Counselor
License Description
Problem Gambling Counselors must be certified in the state of Nevada. Applicants for certification must: 1) Be at least 21 years old. 2) Not have abused alcohol or controlled substances for 2 years prior to submitting an application. 3) Not have been on parole or probation for 2 years prior to submitting an application. 4) Observe "Ethical Standards and Requirements". 5) Submit 2 sets of fingerprint cards. In addition to the general requirements listed above, specific requirements for each category are listed below. Certified Problem Gambling Counselor: Bachelors, Masters or PhD in an approved social science field, 2,000 hours employment under clinical supervision in problem gambling counseling, proof of completion of 60 hours of training specific to problem gambling approved by the Board, and pass a written exam (scoring at least 70%) and oral interview. Certified Problem Gambling Counselor Intern: a high school diploma or GED, verification of graduation from an accredited college or university in an appropriate social science field or submittal of an educational affidavit indicating enrollment in college, a supervision agreement, and proof of completion of 30 hours of training specific to problem gambling approved by the Board. Problem Gambling Supervisor's Certificate: Visit the Board's website for information on the requirements. Allowance for Licensure by Other Nevada State Boards: one licensed as a clinical social worker, nurse, marriage and family therapist, psychologist, or alcohol and drug abuse counselor may apply for Problem Gambling Counselor licensure if (s)he has: 1) Completed at least 6 months or 1,000 hours of supervised counseling of problem gamblers approved by the board, and 2) Completed at least 60 hours of training specific to problem gambling approved by the board. For information regarding exceptions to the certification/licensure requirements, recertification/continuing education requirements and/or substituting education in lieu of experience requirements, visit the Board's website. Fees may be subject to change. Fees are: problem gambling counselor application/certificate - $620 (includes $60 processing fee and $410 testing fees); renewal (valid 2 years)-- $250; problem gambling counselor intern certificate - $225; intern certification renewal--$75 annually; problem gambling supervisor's certificate - $60.
