Laboratory Director
License Description There are three laboratory categories for director licensure: Licensed, Registered and Pulmonary Laboratory Director. To apply for licensure as a Director of a LICENSED laboratory, an applicant must: 1) Be a physician licensed by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners to practice medicine in the state and meet additional related certification, training or experience requirements set by the Division, OR 2) Hold a doctoral degree from an accredited institution with a major in a chemical, physical, or biological science, and be certified by one or more of the following American Boards of: Medical Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Bioanalysis, Medical Laboratory Immunology, Forensic Toxicology, or Medical Genetics (or have qualifications equivalent to certification.) An applicant for licensure as a director of a licensed laboratory for pulmonary conditions must be a physician licensed to practice in Nevada and must be certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the subspecialty of pulmonary disease. To apply for licensure as a Director of a REGISTERED laboratory, an applicant must: 1) Be a physician licensed by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners to practice medicine in the state and: a) Have at least 1 year of experience directing or supervising non-waived laboratory testing in an approved laboratory; or b) Have at least 20 credit hours of continuing medical education in laboratory practice regarding the responsibilities of a director; or c) Have received approved laboratory training during medical residency equivalent to the 20 hours of continuing medical education mentioned above; OR 2) Hold a doctoral degree from an accredited institution with a major program of study in a chemical, physical, or biological science and: a) have 1 year of experience directing or supervising laboratory testing in an approved laboratory; or b) Be certified by one or more of the following American Boards of: Medical Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Bioanalysis, Medical Laboratory Immunology, Forensic Toxicology, or Medical Genetics (or have qualifications equivalent to certification.) Fees may be subject to change. Fees are: initial licensure--$500; biennial renewal --$300.
