Service Technician
License Description

A Service Technician installs, services, repairs, certifies, reconditions, tests or calibrates commercial weighing or measuring devices. Such weighing or measuring devices those that are commercially used or employed in establishing the size, quantity, extent, area, or measurement of quantities, things, produce, or articles for distribution or consumption that are purchased, offered or submitted for sale, hire, or award, or used in computing any basic charge or payment for services rendered on the basis of weight or measure. The term includes any accessory attached to or used in connection with a device when such accessory is so designed or installed such that its operation affects, or could affect, the accuracy of the device.

Registration Requirements:

  • Submit application and registration fee
  • Applicants must indicate on the application form and pay a fee for each device category or categories for which the applicant desires to be registered to work. Device categories for registration purposes are as follows:
    • Category A: Scales, capacity of 30 lbs or less, except precision scales, jewelers scales, or pharmaceutical scales
    • Category B: Scales, capacity greater than 30 lbs up to and including 300 lbs
    • Category C: Scales, capacity greater than 300 lbs up to and including 3,000 lbs
    • Category D: Scales, capacity greater than 3,000 lbs up to and including 20,000 lbs, except vehicle scales
    • Category E: Scales, capacity greater than 20,000 lbs, except vehicle scales
    • Category F: Vehicle scales
    • Category G: Analytical balances
    • Category H: Retail motor fuel dispensers, except LP gas and natural gas dispensers
    • Category I: LP gas retail motor fuel dispensers
    • Category J: Natural gas retail motor fuel dispensers
    • Category K: Vehicle tank meters, except LP gas and natural gas meters
    • Category L: Bulk storage meters
    • Category M: LP gas vehicle tank meters
    • Category N: Taxi meters
    • Category O: Linear and cordage measure
    • Category P: Farm bulk milk tanks
    • Category Q: Bulk motor oil meters
    • Category R: Lift truck on-board weighing systems, including refuse or recyclable materials collection trucks
    • Category S: Timing devices
  • Each applicant must have a current edition of NIST Handbook 44 and a current copy of the department's weights and measures rules in his/her possession before the Department issues a certificate of registration
  • Applicants must possess or have available test equipment to adequately test devices for which a registration is to be issued; all test equipment must meet specifications as outlined in the applicable NIST Handbook as well as NIST Handbook 44
  • Registration expiration depends on whether or not the employer employs other registered service technicians; contact the Division of Weights and Measures for information
  • Restricted certificate of registration:
    • Permits the registrant only to remove jammed delivery tickets from commercial vehicle tank meters, bulk storage meters, or liquid petroleum gas meters
    • Prohibits the registrant from performing any type of work on commercial weighing, measuring, or counting devices as follows: installations, servicing, repairing, reconditioning, or testing and calibration of commercial devices
    • Expiration and renewal of a restricted certificate of registration is the same for a service technician certificate of registration
