Educational Interpretor/Transliterator
License Description

Educational Interpreters/Transliterators provide translation services for persons ages 3 to 21. An interpreter is a person who provides interpretation services, which is the process of conveying information between American Sign Language (ASL) and English. Transliteration is the process of conveying messages via visible or tactile manual representations of the English language such as manually coded English, cued speech, signed English, Signing Exact English (SEE), and oral transliterating. This process conveys information from one mod of English, spoken or signed, to another mode of English.

Legislation: NH RSA 186; Administrative Rules Chapter Ed Ed 507.35

Certification Requirements:

  • Submit application for certification and non-refundable application fee
  • Hold a minimum of an Associate's degree
  • Meet one of the following entry-level requirements:
    • Receive a passing grade as determined by the State Board of Education on the practical examination in signing for the EIPA Performance Test (EIPA-PT) as specified in Ed 507.35(c);
    • Hold a current national certification from either the National Office of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) of at least level III; or
    • Educational Interpreter certification from another state whose standards are equivalent to Ed 507.35

Examination: Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Written Test (EIPA-WT), and a practical examination in signing as specified in Ed 507.35(c) for those qualifying by examination

Continuing Education: Staff development activities totaling 50 clock hours (or alternative to clock hours) in the school district and/or school administrative unit staff development plan during the three-year certification period

Fees:

  • Three-year certificate: $25
  • Three-year renewal: $25

Reciprocity: Permitted when certification from another state is equivalent to New Hampshire's standards
