Paraeducator
License Description

Paraeducators perform instructional duties or deliver direct services to students and parents. Serve in a position for which a teacher or another professional has ultimate responsibility for the design and implementation of educational programs and services.

Certification Requirements:

Note: The ensuing levels of certification for paraeducators are considered by the New Hampshire State Board of Education as optional in nature, and not mandatory for school districts.

  • Paraeducator I
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Demonstrate a knowledge of and the ability to assist in instruction as determined by the professional educator and including areas such as reading, writing, mathematics, behavior management, life skills, and professionalism, as evidenced by a formal assessment managed by the New Hampshire Department of Education and administered by the Department or the local district
  • Paraeducator II
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Documentation of one of the following:
      • Associate's degree or higher; or
      • A minimum of two years of study at an institution of higher education, or 48 credit hours; or
      • Demonstrate a knowledge of and ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing, or mathematics, or reading readiness, writing readiness, or math readiness, as evidenced by a formal assessment managed by the New Hampshire Department of Education and administered by the Department, the Department's agent(s), or the local district which shall consist of:
        • Submission of documentation demonstrating knowledge and teaching skills in each of the three areas of reading, writing, and mathematics at the second-year college level; or
        • Satisfactory completion of college coursework in any of the three areas of reading, writing, and mathematics at the second-year college level and submission of documentation demonstrating knowledge and teaching skills at the second-year college level in any of the three areas not covered by the college coursework

Examination: Not required

Continuing Education: A minimum of 50 hours continuing education units are required for renewal

Fees:

  • Three-year certificate: $25
  • Three-year renewal: $25

Reciprocity: Not permitted
