Fuel Gas Fitter
License Description

Fuel gas fitters install, repair, service, demolish, or remove pipes, fixtures, fittings, appliances, or apparatus necessary for supplying natural gas or propane for residential or non-residential use from the point of delivery. This includes all gas piping from the supply tank or gas meter to the connection to th ecombustion zone, the installation of all fuel gas fired appliances, the applicable venting of flue gases to the outside atmosphere, and the provisions for air for combustion and ventilation.

Licensure Requirements:

  • Fuel Gas Trainee
    • For a trainee registration license, individuals must enter into an agreement between an employer/licensed fuel gas fitter sponsor to enroll under an approved fuel gas training program meeting the requirements of the Board
    • Complete the Board's apprentice/trainee registration form and pay the specified fee
    • Licensed fuel gas fitters may sponsor as trainees only those individuals who:
      • Work under a licensed New Hampshire fuel gas fitter, who must sponsor the trainee and oversee educational and work experience meeting the requirements for fuel gas ftting licensing; and
      • Hold a currently valid trainee registration license issued by the Board
  • Fuel Gas Piping Installer
    • Installs liquefied propane gas and natural gas piping from the outlet of the natural gas meter or the first-stage regulator for liquefied propane to all fuel gas appliance(s) or other gas utilization equipment
    • To qualify for a fuel gas piping installer license, individuals shall:
      • Provide proof of successful completion of a minimum of 60 hours of educational training as specified in Saf-Mec 305.02 (b)(1); and
      • Complete a minimum of 1,000 working hours of on-the-job experience in the trade or its equivalent in an approved educational setting relevant to the installation of gas piping within 60 consecutive months, 500 hours of which may be applied with proof of relevant experience installing, servicing, and repairing heating oil fired equipment
    • A New Hampshire licensed plumber in good standing, approved by the Board through affidavit, experience, and education or training in the use of NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code, shall be qualified as a fuel gas piping installer upon demonstration of successful completion of the educational requirements specified in Saf-Mec 305.02 (b)(1)
  • Fuel Gas Installation Technician
    • Installs inside and outside piping from the outlet of the gas meter or first-stage regulator or residential and non-residential heating equipment systems or water heating systems, using liquefied propane gas or natural gas. Fuel gas installation includes gas piping, gas appliances, other gas utilization equipment, the venting and vent systems for gas appliances/gas utilization equipment, and performance of safety checks.
    • To qualify for a fuel gas installation technician specialty license, individuals must provide proof of successful completion of:
      • A minimum of 100 hours of educational training covering the subject matter specified in Saf-Mec 305.03(b)(1); and
      • A minimum of 1,000 working hours of on-the-job experience in the trade or equivalent in an approved educational setting relevant to the installation, service, and repair of gas appliances or equipment within 60 consecutive months, 500 hours of which may be applied with proof of relevant experience installing, servicing, and repairing heating oil fired equipment
    • An individual holding a fuel gas piping installer's license per Saf-Mec 305.02 may qualify for a gas installation technician license by providing proof of:
