Midwife
License Description

Midwives provide the necessary supervision, care and advice to women during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period; conduct vaginal deliveries on the midwife's own responsibility, and care for the newborn and the infant. Care to mother and child includes preventive measures, detection of abnormal conditions, procurement of medical assistance when necessary, execution of emergency measures in the absence of medical help, and consulting with a physician whenever there are significant deviations from normal or if there is a medical emergency in either the mother or the infant.

Certification Requirements:

  • Have completed high school or its equivalent
  • Complete one college-level course in human anatomy and physiology, or pass a college-level equivalency program or credit by exam
  • Neonatal resuscitation (NRP) certification
  • Adult and infant/child CPR certification issued by either the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
  • Have not been convicted of a crime involving theft, or injury or violence to others
  • Have no condition or circumstance of character or mental or physical state that might discredit the applicant, or prevent the applicant from expected performance as a midwife
  • Have made arrangements for medical back-up to support the applicant's practice
  • Have made arrangements for prenatal laboratory testing; newborn metabolic screening; and any necessary administration of Rh(D) immune globulin
  • Have experience, achieved within five years prior to date of application, under a preceptorship as follows:
    • Perform at least 100 prenatal visits on at least 15 different clients, including at least five prenatal visits and postpartum follow-up on each of ten clients
    • Attend at least 25 live out-of-hospital births as an observer or person assisting the midwife
    • Attend at least 25 live out-of-hospital births at which the applicant is the primary birth attendant
    • Observe at least five in-hospital births, which may include births of clients transferred to a hospital facility during labor
    • Perform at least 25 newborn examinations
    • Perform at least five repairs of lacerations
    • Perform at least 30 postpartum home or office visits
  • Be proficient in specific technical skill requirements as spelled out in the Administrative Rules Chapter Mid 303.04
  • Pass all required examinations
  • New Hampshire residency is not required, but must show intent to practice in New Hampshire

Examination: The following exams are required: North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) written and oral exams (midwifery knowledge), and New Hampshire written exam (state law)

Continuing Education: The following are required for certificate renewal: 20 contact hours of continuing education; current NRP certification; current CPR certification; and participation in at least six peer reviews including at least one case presentation by the applicant for peer review

  • New Hampshire examination: $20
  • Certification: $110
  • Biennial renewal: $110

Reciprocity: Those currently licensed or holding other legal recognition from one of the states approved by NARM can qualify for certification if the written examination has been taken
