Wetlands Scientist, Certified
License Description

Wetlands Scientists use special knowledge of hydric soils, hydrophytic vegetation, and wetland hydrology to delineate wetland boundaries and prepare wetlands maps, classify wetlands, prepare wetland function value assessments, design and implement wetland mitigation, monitor wetland functions and values, and prepare associated reports.

Certification Requirements:

  • Must have satisfactory evidence of good professional character
  • Successfully pass an examination which includes references to wetland characteristics in New England
  • Meet one of the following educational requirements:
    • Be a graduate of an accredited college curriculum with a baccalaureate or an Associate's degree, including successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester hours in any of the following environmental sciences: botany, soil science, hydrology, wetland science, biology, forestry, wildlife, ecology, water resources, plant science, agronomy, geology, or earth science, and have one or more years experience in the practice of wetland science; or
    • Have a minimum of 12 combined credit or non-credit semester hours in any of the environmental sciences listed above, and have three or more years experience in the practice of wetland science
  • Have experience in the field of wetland science, gained through one of the following:
    • Teaching wetland science courses or performing research in wetland science at an accredited college, university, or institution offering an approved wetland science or wetland ecology curriculum; or
    • Actual field experience gained in an acceptable apprenticeship program; or
    • Actual field mapping experience, defined as the delineation of wetland boundaries and the preparation of wetland maps in accordance with standards for the identification of wetlands adopted by the Department of Environmental Services or the United States Army Corps of Engineers or its successor
  • Educational training shall not be considered as experience; summer employment shall be considered experience

Examination: Written and field examinations required – includes reference to wetland characteristics in New England.

Continuing Education: 24 hours of continuing education are required for renewal

  • Written exam: $125
  • Certificate upon exam: $275
  • Field exam: $200
  • Biennial renewal: $120
  • Certification as Wetlands Scientist: $125
  • Certificate as apprentice: $75
  • Late renewal (per month): $24
  • Replacement certificate: $50
    Certificates expire on the last day of the certificate holder's month of birth in the second year following year of issuance

Reciprocity: Permitted, provided that the other state's licensing requirements are substantially similar to, or higher than, those of this state, and provided that the other state certifies soil scientists or wetlands scientists under a similar provision
