Farrier
License Description
Farriers remove worn or defective shoes from hooves using nail snippers and pincers. They examine hooves to detect bruises and cracks, determine required trimming, and trim and shape hooves using knives and snippers. They measure hooves using calipers and steel tape and select aluminum or steel shoes to match the hoof measurement and usage. They also place leather pads, sponges, or oakum-pine tar mixtures on bruised or cracked hooves for protection. They shape shoes to fit hooves using swage, forge, and hammer. They nail shoes to hooves and file hooves flush with shoe.
