License Description The court interpreter certification provides a professional credential denoting a minimum level of skill. Court interpreters work as self-employed, free-lance interpreters who interpret in court proceedings which involve non-English-speaking individuals as parties or witnesses. Court interpreters must possess high levels of knowledge and fluency in English and the non-English language, a level generally equivalent to that of a college educated native speaker of the language. Court interpreters must also possess specialized cognitive and motor skills; have an understanding of court procedure, basic justice system concepts, and terminology; and be thoroughly familiar with appropriate professional and ethical conduct.
