License Description
PROFESSIONAL ARCHITECT
An architect initiates and develops conceptual designs and details for the construction of new buildings and the renovation or repairs of existing buildings. An architect is responsible for the technical preparation of construction documents. The person with this job title provides overall project direction, including coordination with other disciplines involved in the project. To use the title architect in Tennessee, a person must be registered with the registering authority. There are limited circumstances under which individuals may perform architectural work without being registered, as long as they do not call themselves architects. However, there are other circumstances, delineated in Tennessee law, which require a registered architect.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to speak and write the English language, be of good character and repute, and complete the education, experience, and examination requirements.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from a school of architecture whose curriculum has been accredited plus completion of three years of practical experience in architectural work satisfactory to the board. Other combinations of education and experience may be accepted by the state board, as specified in Tennessee law.
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:
National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Architect Registration Examination (ARE).

Required every two years.
