License Description CYTOTECHNOLOGIST

A cytotechnologist (CT) is a laboratory professional who uses special techniques to study the function and structure of human cells. Changes caused by disease such as cancer can be detected by CTs, who prepare slides of cell samples, examine cell samples with a microscope and detect abnormal hormone conditions. The cytotechnologist is responsible for documenting the slide interpretation results of each gynecologic and nongynecologic cytology test examined or reviewed. (A license is required for each person examining cytology slide preparations.

REQUIREMENTS:
Be certified in cytotechnology by a certifying agency approved by the board and meet educational requirements. (Less stringent requirements may apply to renewal for those licensed before August 1, 1988.)

EDUCATION:
Graduation from a school of cytotechnology accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or other accediting agency acceptable to the Board.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
(CT) Cytotechnologist American Society for Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) Board of Certification.

RENEWALS:
Licenses must be renewed every two years.
