EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - ADVANCED (EMT-A)
(formerly EMT-IV) An advanced emergency medical technician begins IVs and administers fluids for shock treatment and other medical purposes. Performs functions as any licensed EMT, i.e. performs an initial patient survey, provides emergency care and recognizes injuries and illness; gains knowledge of pre-existing medical conditions, previously prescribed medications, medical preference, and ID of the patient; performs, under authorized medical control, skills or procedures for which he has qualified by training and examination.
REQUIREMENTS:
At least 18 years old; high school graduate or GED, ability to read, write and speak the English language; two (2) recent (within the preceding 12 months) original letters from medical professionals attesting to applicant's personal character; have no history within 3 years of habitual intoxication, personal misuse of drugs or intoxicating liquors, narcotics, controlled substances or other drugs or stimulants so as to adversely affect ability to perform as an AEMT; physical health adequate to provide patient care, absence of communicable diseases, and suitable emotional fitness to provide for the care and lifting of the ill or injured; obtain a criminal background check conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); meet training and examination requirements.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of an approved basic Emergency Medical Technician course including all examinations within two (2) years of completion of training. Complete additional training to qualify to perform related advanced procedures.
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion of a National Registry of Emergency Medics approved by the Board or two college credit quarter hours in EMT related studies, with 8 of those hours in Pediatric related topics, approved by the Board.
