SPECIAL TRAINING DO
An orthopedic doctor, also known as an orthopedist, is a doctor of osteopathy (DO) who specializes in the musculoskeletal system-bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Must have a degree in osteopathic medicine from an accredited school. Two (2) original letters from medical professional on the signatory's letterhead attesting to the applicant's good moral character. Completion of a one (1) year internship or postgraduate year one (PGY-1) in a hospital approved by the American Osteopathic Association, American Medical Association or its accreditation program for medical education, or the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospitals.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Board-certified orthopedic surgeons have successfully completed a minimum of 13 years of formal education:
Undergraduate: Four years of study in a college or university
Medical School: Four years of study in a school of medicine
Orthopedic Residency: Five years of study at a major medical institution
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:
The Certification Examination for Orthopaedic Physician's Assistants/Orthopaedic Assistants will be weighted in approximately the following manner:
Anatomy and Physiology -15%
Musculoskeletal Conditions - 30%
Orthopaedic History and Physical Examination - 10%
Imaging and Laboratory Studies - 10%
Treatment of Musculoskeletal Conditions - 35%
Passage of the NBCOPA/NBCOA examination also signifies an entry level of knowledge in the following categories in the specialty of orthopaedic medicine and surgery:
Pharmacology
Assessment and treatment of adult and pediatric orthopaedic diseases and injuries
Principles and techniques of operative procedures
Functions and applications of instrumentation and equipment utilized in operative orthopaedic procedures
Principles and techniques of traction, casting and splint applications
Clinical evaluation and physical assessment.
CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
At this time, it is not required that licensees register for an account but the board is encouraging licensees utilize this is a tool to assist in the tracking of the required continuing education. The Board is providing this service to licensees at no cost. CE Broker also has a course search available so licensees can search for courses they can complete to be in compliance with the continuing education requirements.
RENEWAL:
A special training license may be issued for a one (1) year period only but may be renewed each year on its anniversary date so long as the applicant is still in training and upon submission of a written renewal request from the training program director and payment of the Special Training License Fee.
