Learn how to impress with a cover letter.

Your cover letter is the place to sell your skills and show your interest in a position. It's a great chance to highlight achievements that would make you an ideal candidate for the job.

When should I include a cover letter?

Many employers don't ask for a cover letter when you apply. Often, your resume can communicate everything you need to tell an employer. Here are times when you should write and send a cover letter:

  • Does the job posting ask for a cover letter? You need to write one! Skip to the section below for tips on how to craft a good cover letter.
  • Does the posting or online application list a cover letter as optional? It's a good idea to include one to highlight your match to the job, explain employment gaps or issues, or describe your special interest in this job and employer. 
  • Did the employer ask you to email your resume? You can use the body of the email as your cover letter, following the tips below.

How do I write a good cover letter?

It's important to write a tailored cover letter for each position you apply for. But cover letters don't need to be long. A good letter can be about 200-400 words, with just 3-4 short paragraphs.

For most cover letters, include these sections:

  • Heading and greeting. Include the date, your name, your phone number and email address. Include your city if it's relevant for the job (for instance, if the position is hybrid and requires you to be on-site some of the time, the employer might want to know that you live locally). Address the letter to a specific person whenever possible. If you can't find an individual's name, use the job title of the recipient (Maintenance Supervisor, Office Manager), or perhaps "Human Resources" or "Search Committee." Do not address your letter to a business, a department, or "To Whom It May Concern."
  • Brief introduction. Use the first paragraph to explain who you are and your reason for writing, including how you found out about the position. Express your energy and enthusiasm.
  • Your highlights. In the next two to three paragraphs, briefly summarize your skills, education, experience, and achievements that could contribute to the employer's success. Explain why you want to work for the employer.
  • Closing. Thank the person for taking the time to read your letter. Tell the employer how you plan to follow-up, or that you look forward to hearing from them. Use an appropriate closing, such as “Sincerely.”

Can I use AI to write my cover letters?

It's fine to use AI programs like ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot to help write cover letters. You can ask an AI program to read your resume and the job posting, and ask for a draft cover letter. Then be sure to edit the letter so it reflects your unique "voice", your skills and experience, and your interest in the position.

Dear Ms./Mr. [Hiring Manager's Name],

First paragraph: State the job you're applying for. Mention how you learned of the opening. One line about what especially interests you about the job or employer.

Next 2-3 paragraphs: Describe your key skills and strengths for the position. Include something unique about your experience or education that relates to this job or employer. Use different examples or language than your resume. Explain why you want to work for this employer. Name something specific you have learned about the employer, and how you relate to it. Use clear, strong writing skills.

Final paragraph: Mention that your resume is attached, and state your enthusiasm to meet with them to discuss the position. If your schedule is busy, mention when you are readily available. Include a statement or question that will encourage the reader to respond. Thank the employer for considering your applicaiton.
